SIGHT wORDS
I have had people ask me how I teach sight words and what sight words I would recommend teaching. The words I like to start teaching with are the Dolch List. They are the most 220 words read in the English Language. The 220 words are divided into pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rdgrade. Even though I am talking about English site words, the method can be applied to any language. I first decide to choose the first five words I want to teach. They usually are words from the pre-primer list. Those words would be the, is, on, in, & come in English. The student will go through the flashcards at least three times a day. My flashcards have a word written on them, outlined in the sand. Sometimes, I use flashcards that I have made. My flashcards have the word outlined in the sand. Those words are written on cardboard, as shown below. Outline the letters in glue, and sprinkle the sand onto the glue. Other times, I use the commercial sandpaper words, which are also pictured below. The reason I use colored sand is that it is easier to see. You could also use different colored cardboard. I wrote the word on the wood and colored sand.
Time # 1
1. I would take the five flashcards and show the first word, “the.” I would tell the student “the” and then have the student say the word “the.”
2. Trace the word with her finger and say the letters as she traces the word.
3. She needs to repeat the word when she is done tracing the letters.
4. I proceed through all 5 of the words this way.
Time # 2
1. You are again showing the student the five words. Show the student the flashcard. Have them say the word. This time, you can write the word on the chalkboard or whiteboard and have them trace the word that you have written. Have them say the letter as they trace it. After they have completed tracing the word, they must repeat it. An occupational therapist has told me it is better to have them write it on the chalkboard because it gives more resistance.
Time # 3
1. Show the student the flashcard. If they know the word, have them say the word. If they don’t know the word, you can tell them the word. This time, instead of tracing the sandpaper word, they will write it themselves in shaving cream, sand, or rice. If they cannot write the word themselves, you can do a hand-over-hand to help them. You can keep the word out so they can see how it is spelled. When the student completes the five words, I let them play with whatever sensory item they have been writing.
If your child is non-verbal, the way to proceed is to lay out 3 or 4 flashcards and ask your son/daughter to touch the word. Since she can’t say the letters, the teacher or parent would tell them as the child traces them.
How do I know if my child has mastered the word? I would set up a chart to track whether they know the word. After four days of getting the word correct on the first try, that word is taken out of the pack. Here is the chart that I use to keep track. You will find the chart in the pictures at the end of the “Tip.”

On Friday mornings, I would review all the mastered cards in flashcard form once. Place the missed words back in the pack so they can review it. Place a new flashcard into the group to be worked on three times daily. The student should always have five or more cards to practice.
On my YouTube channel, I have sight words that I use with my clients. The word flashes three different times. The first time, the background is black with yellow letters. This slide also has a picture associated with the word. A link to the channel is provided
